Before I was diagnosed with lymphoma, I was living a lifestyle that I thought was ‘healthy’ and completely blind to the fact that this lifestyle was likely the main reason my health took a turn…
Cancer was my wake-up call…
It was time for me to look in the mirror and acknowledge that I wasn’t treating my body very well and that my choices had severe consequences…
Thanks to my journey with cancer, I went from being completely unaware of how to nourish my body, to discovering a science-based dietary pattern that helped me heal from cancer and prevent recurrence and secondary cancers.
I was living a lifestyle I thought was healthy, going to the gym but eating a diet that included processed foods, fast foods, alcohol, and animal foods. Although I was in decent shape and might have looked relatively healthy to the outside world, I suffered from severe debilitating IBS (that I had since childhood), as well as asthma and eczema all over my face and body. I was clearly not healthy but it would take a severe wake-up call, called cancer, for me to see this.
During treatment, I knew that optimizing my diet had to be important, but my oncologist told me that I could eat whatever I want. I wanted to give myself the best chance at healing by taking back control of my life. I knew nutrition had to be a part of the equation, but I had been eating a diet that was loaded with processed and animal foods, and clearly this way of eating did not help me in building a body that was resistant to cancer.
My oncologist advised me to eat whatever I wanted, and not to worry about my diet if I met my caloric needs. Food quality was not a concern for my oncologist, but I had a feeling there was more to this. I wanted to regain my health, have the energy to go through treatment, manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and suppress cancer growth. What better place to start than by what I was putting into my body? Still, I didn’t know where to start.
I started researching around the clock to figure out what I should be eating during cancer treatment. I saw countless doctors, specialists, homeopaths, dietitians, and naturopaths, and spent thousands of dollars trying to heal my body using various modalities in addition to chemotherapy and radiation.
I had no idea what I was in for. After several months of seeing specialists who all had conflicting ideas about what the best diet was for me during treatment, I took matters into my own hands and traveled to an integrative oncology clinic in Lima, Peru, where oncologists treated patients with conventional treatment as well as nutrition therapy and herbal therapy. I met some amazing doctors and health practitioners who taught me about a cancer-fighting diet. It was clear that nutrition therapy was a foundational part of cancer treatment.
In the end, it was me taking my health into my own hands that allowed me to get back to balance.
I embraced the new cancer-fighting dietary plan and what happened to my health during cancer treatment was astounding:
- I had ample amounts of energy
- My mood remained stable
- I didn’t experience nausea or vomiting during chemotherapy
- I didn’t lose very much hair
- I was given 1/4th of the original chemotherapy dose that was proposed due to my
tumor shrinking before chemotherapy was given - My stable bloodwork during chemotherapy shocked my oncologist
- I recovered remarkably quickly from chemotherapy and radiation
- I lost steroid-induced weight rapidly
- My body went back into balance sooner than I imagined
Best of all, I am now 16 years cancer-free and the dietary habits I developed because of my cancer journey led me to my best health today. Yes, I am healthier now, at at age 36, than I was at 20. Cancer taught me that what I put into my body matters more than anything else that is in my control. I learned that prevention is key, and nutrition is the foundation. You can create an environment in the body that is resistant to cancer growth and help prevent cancer before it ever manifests. If it should manifest, give yourself the best chance at beating it.
After my experience with cancer, I dove into nutrition research.
I spent hundreds of hours studying the link between diet and cancer and looking at what the medical literature showed.

What I discovered shocked me:
- Cancer is more preventable than treatable. Despite advanced progress in treatment options, cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with rates on the rise…
- Modern medicine is focused on treating people when they are sick- managing diseases as opposed to preventing them. Often, it’s too late to treat diseases that have already manifested, such as cancer…
- Research shows that as many as 90-95% of all cancers are caused by lifestyle factors (including dietary habits) while only 5-10% are caused by genetic defects. When it comes to diet alone, 30-35%% of all cancers are directly caused by poor dietary habits…
- That means we have more control than we might think over cancer development…
- Nutrition is CRITICAL as a means of cancer prevention, as well as during treatment and after treatment…
- Certain dietary patterns have been associated with a reduced cancer risk of cancer and others with an increased risk…
- Additionally, researchers have discovered scientifically proven cancer-fighting foods that have been shown to suppress tumor development directly in lab studies…
- By including specific cancer-fighting foods in your daily diet, you can promote or hinder cancer development throughout its various stages. Through superior nutrition, you can create an environment in the body that helps prevent and control cancer growth.

Learning all of this, all I wanted to do was help other people on their journey with cancer and empower them by showing to take control of their health by paying attention to what they are putting into their body
I wondered why this information wasn’t being blasted across radio and television stations daily, and it frustrated me, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I was first introduced to Hanna shortly after starting my breast cancer treatments. I was in pretty rough shape. Fatigued, in pain, with inflammation throughout my body. I had digestive issues, sleep issues, and was stressed and anxious. Hanna got me back on track to a balanced state of health. Within the first 4 weeks of following the individualized plan she put together for me, I could already see and feel improvement. My pain and inflammation levels from the chemo decreased and became manageable, my energy levels increased, my bloating and heartburn resolved, and my digestive issues improved greatly. My stress and anxiety became almost nonexistent. I was able to complete all my chemotherapy appointments on time because my blood work stayed within the normal range. I also lost my post-chemo weight faster than I had prior to these dietary and lifestyle changes. The weight came off within one week as opposed to three weeks after previous chemo sessions. After a few months on the plan, I had very few issues anymore. When it was time to prepare for surgery, Hanna created another plan to get my body strong and ready for surgery, and then again another plan for post-operatory recovery. My radiation treatments went well with only little reaction and I healed quickly because I was taking care of not only my external but also internal health. Hanna has been a tremendous help. Her dietary and lifestyle recommendations are a big part of what got me through treatments as well as I did. She is an absolutely wonderful person to work with and I look forward to continuing to work with her toward my greater health during my continued recovery.

Hi Hanna, thank you, Hanna, this was a great course. I learned a great deal. I was wondering if I could have the presentation and any handouts. I would, if I could like to share this with my brother who completely changed his diet two years ago after barely surviving a brain stem tumour. He is much better, but still on the mend, the road is long and challenging. I am have been making efforts to mend my ways too, more of the fruits, veggies, legumes, whole grains, etc, but again the road is full of challenges after years of the old ways. Fortunately I have been reasonably active in my lifestyle, so that has helped. Thank you!
